Tapentadol treats chronic moderate to severe pain. Do not drink alcoholic drink with this medication. Do not suddenly stop taking tapentadol. Your doctor will slowly decrease your dose.   • Pain due to surgery if you are already using any opioid medicine for extended use or if the pain due to surgery is thought to be moderate to severe and persist for an extended period

Swallow this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Do not cut, crush, or chew this medicine. Do not take a tablet that is not whole. A broken or crushed pill can be very dangerous. You may get too much medicine. Swallow only one tablet at a time. Do not wet, soak, or lick the tablet before you take it. You can take it with food or without. If the drug upsets your stomach, take it with food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Please do not take it more often than directed. Tell your doctor or health care expert if your pain is not going away, or if it becomes worse, or if you experience any new or a different pain. You might develop tolerance to the painkilling drug Tapentadol. However, tolerance does not mean that you will require a higher dose of the drug to get relief from the pain. Tolerance is normally expected if you take medication for a longer duration.

Do not stop suddenly taking your drugs because you may develop a severe reaction. Your body becomes used to the drug. It never means that you have become addicted. Addiction is generally a behavior which is related to getting used to a drug for a non-medical reason. If you have pain, you have a medical reason to take pain medicine.
